Lithium-Ion Taxi in New York starting 2007

Coolness arbiters at Animal New York may be spit-taking their PBR milkshakes right now, but the deal to bring electric-drive PT Cruisers to NYC is done. The first such lithium-ion taxi has landed in NYC, where its viability as a recepticle for cell phones and umbrellas and venue for drunken, post-midnight grope sessions will be under review. According to Green Car Congress, the Taxi and Limousine commission set aside 14 TLC charters -- the NYC equivalent of Wonka's golden ticket -- for the program, whch will correspond with Yellow Cabs' 100th anniversary in 2007. The L-PT Cruiser uses a Ballard Power Systems 312V 67 MS electric drive system, the same one used in prototypes developed for NASA and the US Navy.
